Freediver Instructor Course


The PFI Freediver Instructor course by PFA is for avid freedivers who have successfully attained the PFI Assistant Instructor certification. This certification is for individuals who want to teach PFI freedive training programs as a lead Instructor.

In this course, you will:

  • Learn techniques to present and manage student learning in classroom, confined water, and open water environments
  • Understand the Open Water Rig components and how to assemble them
  • Have professional level safety and problem management skills for assisting student emergencies
  • Conduct your own Instructor Candidate presentations and microteaching to PFI educational standards
  • Learn how to develop lesson plans for classroom, confined water, and open water sessions

  • You are interested in teaching as a lead Instructor in PFI, or affiliate, Freediver courses

For this course, you must have DAN (Divers Alert Network) Dive Accident Insurance. If you do not have this already, you can sign up on the DAN website.


This course is taught by highly trained PFA Instructors at locations all over the world. It includes:

  • Theory exams
  • Academic presentations
  • Confined water presentations
  • Open water presentations
The schedule and layout/order of these sessions vary slightly by location. The program typically runs over two days. Click the link on any course to find the exact schedule for that program.


  • Minimum age of 18 years
  • PFI Assistant Freediver Instructor
  • Up to date (within two years) CPR, First Aid, O2 Administration, and AED certifications (documentation required)
  • Be in good medical and physical condition and with above average swimming
  • Good health and fitness (see Medical Form)


To receive PFI Freediver Instructor certification, you must:

  • Pass all academic knowledge quizzes and exams
  • Demonstrate mastery and understanding of Assistant Instructor level supervision skills
  • Demonstrate mastery and understanding of Instructor level supervision skills
  • Demonstrate mastery in confined water and open water skills
  • Demonstrate Instructor level rescue and egress skills
  • Demonstrate safe and responsible diving practices
  • Present an academic presentation and receive a passing score
  • Present a confined water and an open water teaching presentation and receive passing scores
  • Do the following:

    • Perform timed swim
    • Perform timed mask-fins-snorkel swim
    • Rescue with egress
    • Tread for a specific time
    • Perform to PFI standard throughout all freediving and swimming capacity tests and performances

Qualification of graduates

Upon successful completion of PFI Freediver Instructor, graduates may participate as a lead Instructor in PFA or self-organized PFI freediving courses. Instructors can teach the following PFI programs: Safe Buddy, Snorkeler, Freediver, and related coaching and open line sessions.

Required equipment

Students must supply:

  • Low-volume mask
  • Snorkel
  • Freediving bi-fins
  • Full wetsuit (3 mm for warm water locations; 5-7 mm for cold water locations)
  • Rubber weight belt and a small number of weights
  • Timing device and a separate freediving computer
  • PFI-issued course manual


PFA Freediver course prices vary by location, but start at $745. Graduates are also responsible for:

  • Paying PFI membership fees
  • Obtaining professional liability insurance (visit First Dive website)

To secure your spot in a course, we need to receive your registration and either a 50 percent deposit or full payment. Any outstanding course balance is due by the start of the course. See our course schedule to register.
