Instructor Crossover Course

Performance Freediving Academy provide two different ways for instructors to crossover to PFI.

  • Option 1 is for those who are already Freediver Instructors with another training organization.
  • Option 2 is for scuba instructors who want to begin teaching freediving.
The chief difference between the two is:

  • Those who are already Freediver Instructors take the one-day Intermediate Freediver Equivalency Test
  • Those who are scuba instructors take the complete four-day Intermediate Freediver Equivalency course
The program consists of the following:

  • Intermediate Freediver Equivalency Test or Intermediate Freediver Equivalency course
  • Safety Freediver Course
  • Freediver Supervisor Course
  • Freediver Instructor Exam

Is this course for you?

It is if:

  • You are certified as a Freediver Instructor or scuba instructor with another agency
  • You are fit and in good health.
Download and review the PFI medical form. You must get a doctor's approval to participate in the course. Contact us if you have questions about the medical form.

For this course, you must have DAN (Divers Alert Network) Dive Accident Insurance. If you do not have this already, you can sign up on the DAN website.

Format/duration

This program typically runs between six and seven days (Option 1) or nine to ten days (Option 2).

  • Scuba instructors can save a day if they already have PFI Intermediate Freediver certification.
  • You can also save a day if you have current First Aid and CPR certifications.

Prerequisites

  • Be a scuba or Freediver Instructor in Active status with a recognized training organization
  • Have above-average swimming skills
  • Good health and fitness (see Medical Form)

Skills

To receive PFI Freediver Instructor certification, you must:

  • Pass all academic knowledge quizzes and exams
  • Demonstrate mastery and understanding of Assistant Instructor level supervision skills
  • Demonstrate mastery and understanding of Basic Instructor level supervision skills
  • Demonstrate mastery in confined water and open water skills
  • Demonstrate Instructor level rescue and egress skills
  • Demonstrate safe and responsible diving practices
  • Present an academic presentation and receive a passing score
  • Present a confined water and an open water teaching presentation and receive passing scores
  • Do the following:

    • Perform timed swim
    • Perform timed mask-fins-snorkel swim
    • Rescue with egress
    • Tread for a specific time
    • Perform to PFI standard throughout all freediving and swimming capacity tests and performances

Qualification of graduates

Upon successful completion, graduates may participate as a lead Instructor in PFA or self-organized PFI freediving courses. Instructors can teach the following PFI programs: Safe Buddy, Snorkeler, Freediver, and related coaching and open line sessions.

Required equipment

Students must supply:

  • Low-volume mask
  • Snorkel
  • Freediving bi-fins
  • Full wetsuit (3 mm for warm water locations; 5-7 mm for cold water locations)
  • Rubber weight belt and a small number of weights
  • Timing device or freediving computer
  • PFI-issued course manuals
  • Underwater slate and pencil

Cost

PFA Freediver course prices vary by location, but start at:

  • US $1,535 for Option 1
  • US $2,085 for Option 2
Graduates are also responsible for:

  • Paying PFI membership fees
  • Obtaining professional liability insurance (visit First Dive website)

Registration and payment details

To secure your spot in a course, we need to receive your registration and either a 50 percent deposit or full payment. Any outstanding course balance is due by the start of the course. See our course schedule to register.
